Roscoe Conkling (1829-1888) was an American politician and lawyer who played a significant role in the late 19th-century politics. Born in Albany, New York, Conkling graduated from the National Law School and soon established a successful legal practice. He gained recognition as a prominent member of the Republican Party and became one of its key figures during the post-Civil War era.
Conkling's political career flourished as he served as a United States Representative from 1859 to 1863, and later as a United States Senator from 1867 to 1881. He gained a reputation for his eloquence, debating skills, and sharp intellect, earning him a place among the best orators of his time. Garfield, a fellow Republican, appointed one of Conkling's political rivals to a federal position. Conkling resigned from the Senate in protest. After leaving politics, he resumed his legal practice but did not return to public life.
