Zamfara State is a geopolitical entity located in northwestern Nigeria. It is one of the 36 states that make up the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The state was officially created on October 1, 1996, during the military regime of General Sani Abacha, with Gusau as its capital.
Zamfara State is predominantly inhabited by the Hausa-Fulani ethnic group, and their primary language is Hausa. The state covers an area of approximately 38,418 square kilometers and is bordered by Sokoto and Niger States to the north, Kaduna State to the east, Kebbi State to the south, and Niger Republic to the west.
The region is known for its rich mineral deposits, especially gold, which has earned Zamfara State the nickname "Home of Gold." However, the state has faced significant challenges in terms of security, particularly with regards to banditry and illegal mining activities that have contributed to socio-economic instability in the area.

The word "Zamfara" originates from the Hausa language, which is one of the major languages spoken in Nigeria. The term "Zamfara" is believed to have originated from the Hausa word "Samfarar", which means "farmland" or "place of farming".
In the past, the region now known as Zamfara State was predominantly an agrarian area characterized by its fertile land and agricultural activities. Over time, the name "Samfarar" transformed into "Zamfara", and it eventually became the official name of the state located in Northwestern Nigeria.
